Aviation Operations on the Ground Level 2 Apprenticeship

About the course

This apprenticeship is for anyone who is pursuing a IUAS trade route and completing the IUAS Level 2 course. It proves your competence to potential civilian employers that you can work in ground roles in the aviation industry. If you are not in the RA but feel that you are in a suitable role for the course, then speak to our team to find out if you can take it as a standalone qualification.

With the apprenticeship you will achieve the following:
• Level 2 BTEC Diploma Aviation Operations on the Ground
• Level 2 BTEC Certificate Aviation Operations on the Ground
• Functional Skills Level 1 in maths and English

You will need Functional Skills Level 1 in maths and English to qualify you for promotion to Lance Bombardier (if applicable). If you already have Level 1 you will be given the option to progress to Level 2.


With this qualification you will complete several units (as well as Functional Skills) including:
  •  Health and Safety within Aviation
  • Aviation Security
  • Aviation Communications
  • Support Flight Operations
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities in the Passenger Transport Sector
  • Recognise airside hazards and minimise risks
  • Contribute to the maintenance of aviation health, safety and security
  • Carry out effective communications and information transfer in an aviation environment
  • Operate specialist equipment in an aviation environment
  • Inspect and maintain ground power units
  • Operate an IT system in the aviation industry
  • Maintain effective working practices in the aviation industry
  • Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Deliver reliable customer service

Members of the Watchkeeper launch and recovery team can complete the additional units:

  • Operate a vehicle airside
  • Inspect and maintain refuelling systems
How long is the course?

Minimum of one year.


Free to RA personnel if eligible for the apprenticeship, otherwise £240 for RA personnel (or £65 with SLC). £300 for non RA personnel (or £125 with SLC).


You will have a qualified assessor who will conduct observations on you while doing your normal daily job. You will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence.
