About the course
If you are a member of the Royal Artillery, then our Functional Skills English Level 2 is a requirement of your Level 3 apprenticeship. You will also need it to qualify for promotion to sergeant. If you are a veteran or a dependant, then our Level 2 course is a great course for you to develop your English skills further. This qualification is designed to give you the skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in work and everyday life.
The Level 2 Award is a nationally recognised civilian qualification, and the level is equivalent to GCSE grades A - C. By achieving your Functional Skills English Level 2 you will:
Increase your chances of promotion
Improve your job prospects for future employment
Extend your knowledge
You will cover the following units:
Reading – selecting, reading, understanding and comparing texts and using them to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions.
Writing – writing formal documents using standard English.
Speaking, Listening and Communication – making a range of contributions to formal discussions in a range of contexts, including those that are unfamiliar, and make effective formal presentations.
How long is the course?
Five days classroom study.
Free to those on a RA apprenticeship or £100 for veterans and dependants.
You will undertake a formal assessment for Reading and Writing that will be marked externally. The Speaking and Listening element is assessed internally.
Where do I study?
You will either study at Larkhill whilst you are in 24 Bty, or at your regiment’s/nearest RACPD Learning Centre.
If you're studying in 24 Bty, the course will be delivered over five days and it will be timetabled for you during your time there.
If studied at a RACPD Learning Centre, then your tutor will develop a programme that matches your needs over a 1-2 week period with additional self-study as required. See our search by courses page for courses in your area.
The course fee includes one free resit. After that any additional resits cost £15 each for non-apprenticeship learners.
If you are in the RA and on one of our apprenticeships, then you will be offered the qualification as part of your apprenticeship. Otherwise, for more information or to book onto a course, please see your PD Advisor or Learning Centre Manager. Details of your regiment’s/nearest Learning Centre can be found here.
